Nueva Concordancia Strong Exhaustiva
Published in Hardcover by Editorial Betania (15 March, 2002)
Author: James Strong
Average review score:

FANTASTIC!
Any bible student will love having this fantastic concordance.
I learned so much from being able to cross reference all parts
of the Old and New Testament to my hearts desire, in 3 ancient
languages. It's easy to use, it is absolutely comprehensive, and
I know I learned more about the Bible in a year than some people
who have studied the Bible for 20 years. Even if you just have
a proud home library of reference books, this should be in it.

the next book to buy after your Bible
I am surprised that there aren't more reviews on this book. Next to your Bible, a concordance and a Bible dictionary are the two most likely candidates for serious students of the Word, and Strong's Exhaustive Concordance is by far the most popular concordance, hands down. Whenever I do a study, you can be assured that I use the concordance to either look up verses, find out how many times a word is used, or find the basic meaning of a word in the original language. As a concordance it is great, but for word studies you will probably need a dictionary or lexicon that will give greater detail in their definitions. But this should not stop you from purchasing the book, because almost all other modern references now use the Strong's numbering system. So, start with Strong's, use it as your concordance and do use it for the basic definitions, but then as you progress you can purchase other reference volumes that will give you more information but will still utilize the same numbering system. Although the hardback is tremendous, I prefer the softcover edition. It is not as large and bulky, usually costs less, and it can fit inside of your briefcase.

Study the Original Bible text w/o knowing Hebrew or Greek
Strong's Concordance is the bridge for non-Hebrew/Greekspeaking students of the Bible to be able to study the meanings of thewords of the original Hebrew and Greek texts of the Old and New Testament. The concise appendix dictionary of Hebrew and Greek word definitions is a good place to start, but other lexicons are more thorough, such as (1) Gesenius' Hebrew-Chaldee Lexicon to the Old Testament and (2) Zodhiates' Complete Word Study Dictionary: New Testament.

Strong's is the standard for word numbering used by most lexicons. What James Strong could have never fathomed is that the numbering of the words of the Bible in their alphabetical sequence actually corresponds to modern-day numbers, such as years, addresses, phone numbers, places which are key to the latter-day fulfilment of the covenants. It is James Strong who was the unwitting instrument of this uncanny miracle of God.

Old Dogs Remembered

For a good cry......
read one of the short pieces in this anthology. They are also incredibly uplifting too. A brilliant bedside companion for any dog lover.

Not a sad read but a celebratory one
Although each of the pieces in this book was inspired by the loss of a much beloved dog, this is really a book about vibrant, fully-alive dogs: family pets, fellow hunters, soul mates, and best friends. And while none of the dogs remembered so fondly here still lives, Old Dogs affirms the remarkably special place in the heart we reserve for our dogs. My own dog is sturdy in her middle-age, but reading the eulogies and odes in this moving anthology has made me appreciate more all the quirky habits I take for granted, like how she can't resist running off with one of my Reeboks when I'm shoeing up for our evening walk--the little prance she performs when I tell her, "Bring the shoe back!" Not a sad read but a celebratory one, required for every dog owner!

Makes wonderful reading.
This is a remarkable anthology of stories and poems by outstanding authors of the past, as well as more recent times. Although these moving remembrances are only of beloved dogs, the lovers of any species of pet will find identical sentiments for their own losses. Whatever kind of companion animal you had, you will find your own bereavement and healing tears reflected here, as well.

Care was taken to avoid over-sentimentality, in this assortment of loving reflections of dogs, celebrated here. These accounts are full of love, and are sometimes even funny - and we are thrust into the realization that perhaps that is the most wonderful kind of living memorials we can have for a beloved pet. Too often, we lose this perspective, while trying to keep from drowning in our own bereavement and sorrows.

Rather than being a collection of sad literary memorials Old Dogs Remembered is a joyful celebration of life with pets. This inspires healthy new points of view and adjustments to moving on into our new lives, without them.

Here we are treated to many different outlooks on how they permanently enriched the lives of their owners. Reading these heartwarming pages will broaden the understanding of each reader, concerning his/her own personal bereavement. Here, we are offered the collective wisdom of others, who reminisce on their honored pets. There is much to be shared and learned here, as well as enjoyed.

With so many different authors, one must appreciate that references and styles have changed drastically, through the ages. As an example of this, some might find the essay by the dramatist John Galsworthy to be interesting, but a bit troublesome to read. And, as with any anthology, there may be some accounts not everyone would appreciate. But all pet lovers will readily identify with the overall shared remembrances, here. This is a heartwarming collection, which can be enjoyed comfortably, in several installments.

There will be many an uplifting tear shed in its reading, and we suggest it for your reading pleasure.

One Particular Harbor
This book is great - positiveley the best book I've ever read. It follows the story of Janet, a woman with MS. Instantly, you feel as if Janet is an old friend. A good book for when you're feeling frustrated with the world and wishing you could do like Janet did...fly away to Alaska. A true story of adventure!

A positive, funny, honest and very in depth look at MS...
I have read all sorts of books on MS--- Medical journals, personal accounts, alternative healing.. This wonderful book brought me to new heights in my understanding of the disease.. I wanted to jump on a plane to Alaska and pick up where Janet left off! I loved her bravery, her honesty and especially her sincerity. I, too, am a vagabond and traveler with MS... One of my favorite books ever on the subject!

Finally, an upbeat book regarding MS!
A gutsy, funny, sensitive young woman takes readers to Alaska where we learn to love the great state and Janet. This book is a joy for everyone and will remain with you long after the final word is read. See you at the Salty Dawg! Thanks Janet.

Operation Arabian Knights

INTRIGUING BOOK
I JUST READ THE SYNOPSIS OF ROLAND BISHOP'S NEW BOOK CODENAME FIREANT, NOT YET PUBLISHED AND FOUND THE EXCERPTS TO BE EQUAL TO OR EVEN BETTER THAN HIS FIRST BOOK OPERATION ARABIAN KNIGHTS WHICH I READ IN ITS ENTIRETY IN TWO DAYS. IT APPEALED TO MY INTERESTS AND I LITERALLY COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. I WOULD GIVE HIS FIRST BOOK FIVE STARS AND EXPECT THE CODENAME FIRE ANT TO BE EVEN MORE ENTHRALLING. DR. P.T. MESSICK DDS

Fascinating, suspenseful, realistic adventure.
The author, Mr. Bishop, weaves a facinating and captivating story of intrigue, suspense and terrorism. He displays a vast knowledge of his subjects; Iraq, intelligence, patriotism and nuclear holocaust. The story line keeps you riveted and focused in the action and drama. Compelling and filled with suspense. Highly Recommended.

Intriguing International Terrorism at its best'.
With so much unsettling events going on currently in the Mideast, this gripping novel about international terrorism is timely, authentic and filled with convincing characters. The author makes the readers feel the suspence of this covert military operation. This book was so well written, I look forward to reading Bishop's next novel. I highly recommend the book to readers who enjoy Tom Clancy type novels.

The Other House

Authors: Henry James and Flo Gibson

A surprisingly quick read
It's hard to believe that James's theatrical turn of the late 19th century ended with his audience "booing" him off the stage. This novelized play reads quickly and delightfully. I've read more than twenty of his novels, and this was the quickest of them all.

The plot is simple enough (at least for James): two houses, apparently back to back, in Wilverley, a small English village, set the scene. One contains a widow, the other a young married couple. The young wife widows the young husband, and he becomes Wilverley's "most eligible bachelor," except for the fact that he promised his dying wife that he would never marry again, at least not during the life of his child. So somebody has to kill the child, right?

Enter James's genius for character. There's Paul, the huge, infinitely imperturbable son of the wealthy Mrs. Beever; the diminutive and impetuous Dennis Vidal; Tony Bream himself, a remarkably good-natured but insensitive fool; and the powerful Mrs. Beever, whose awful determination cows every one else before her. Like James's best writing, his characters become interesting on their own; his fictions become an opportunity to satisfy curiosity. I think that's what makes this book a "page-turner"; the characters are interesting enough that I want to know what's going to happen.

In the end, I suppose, what makes this book succeed is what would have made the dramatic version fail: James's endless fascination with the workings of the human mind must have become either painfully boring or just incomprehensible to a theatrical audience. However it came about, I recommend it unequivocally.

real, rounded characters
This book is a novelization of the play by the same name. And you can see the stageplay - the characters are continually coming and going - and there's stage business - all of which I think shows some stiffness - yet about half way through the novel I was startled at how much the characters were real, rounded - I could just about see them - they ached with life - I was always aware of the stage during the novel - the story itself is rather shocking - it's a mystery novel! - it's all very well done - it's short - and it's very psychological

Unexpected Page Turner--Timeless
I am impressed with The New York Review's revival of this unexpectedly non-Jamesian title. A truly unique James choice to bring back to life--it's been done so with a cover so compelling (I'm not a tradional James fan) I opened the book which I found locally in a brick and mortar as they are now called, book shop. The internet cannot do justice to the thoughtful sophistication of this book's packaging. (But I can purchase another copy here more easily!) The publisher's comments about the work were also compelling and complimentary to the cover art. The Other House is a mystery, a detective story, a love triangle with more than three angles--a true page turner--with a timelessly human plot and "modern" characters. Anyone thriller fan would be enchanted with it. And turning every page, holding the book, is a sensory thrill. Paper, writing, art--all representative of what any literary rebirth deserves. If it's worth bringing back--do it with quality, I say! They did--along with a whole marvelous collection of equally intriguing books, with well written new introductions. Good choices--the pieces themselves, the introduction authors and the book artist designers. Truly timeless in all ways!

Novell's CNE® Study Set for NetWare® 5

Excellent book
It is an excellent book!

A MUST, but too lengthy
I used this book to pass tho of the exams. I am confident I will pass the rest. But this book is boringly lengthy. Again it is tooooo lengthy. He is adding many non-relevant text. Almost 20 percent of the book is unnecessary stuff.

BUT, it is the most accurate book. In other books, you can find a lot of errors. This has few. NO book on CNE is better than this book. Some other books are easy to read and understand. But, they are not enought to pass the exam!

What else on the market?
-Why I bought his book? 1. You can fill up the small room with MS stuff books. It's tough to find any decent one Novell book. I believe this is the only authoritive book on the market.

-Why I bought this book set instead of the CNA guide?

1. This book set comes with the evaluation Novell 5.0 CD. CNA study guide 5.0 does not have evaluation CD. Now he has a CNA 5.1 study guide which comes with evaluation CD. If you are interested in getting CNA like me, you might want to check that out.

-How do I like this book?

1. Overall this is decent. I would say "wordy" instead of "fluff.":) 2. Be patient:). He repeats same stuff MANY times. That might be useful way for study.

-Did I pass the exam?

1. Yes I did. No sweat.

-What else do I need to pass the exam?

1. I read his CNA note. It focus more on the exam with useful notes. Basically it's less wordy CNA study guide.

2. I bought a practice exam from certify.com which seems authoritive Novell practice test like Transcender for MS

3. After all those readings and practice test, I feel I spent too much time for preparation. Don't spend too much time and money.

-What's the deal?

1. You need CNA. --> check out his new CNA 5.1 Study guide. Maybe practice test. Remember not to spend too much. 2. You need CNE. --> I believe this is it.

-Why do I write review?

1. IMHO, this book deserves better review.

Ordeal by Fire
Published in Paperback by McGraw-Hill Humanities/Social Sciences/Languages (January, 1993)
Author: James M. McPherson
Average review score:

One of the best books on the civil war that I've read.
I first became acquainted with this book twelve years ago when I was a college student taking an American Civil War course and have highly recommended it ever since. The serious history student will find the book to be very comprehensive, covering not only the war itself, but the antebellum years and the period of reconstruction as well. The social, economic, military and political causes and consequences of the war are all covered in great detail. Professor McPherson has also included many visual aids such as maps and charts which the reader will find quite instructive. Needless to say, it was, and has remained, one of my primary resources whenever I need to refresh my memory concerning just about any topic on the war. I wore out my first copy and recently was forced to replace it with a second. However, Ordeal by Fire is really a text book and subsequently not always an easy read. If you prefer your history in narrative form, I highly recommend McPherson's book Battle Cry of Freedom instead.

James M. Mcpherson taught me things I never knew.
I would just like to say that a friend of mine gave me a hardback cover of Ordeal by Fire, which he says he found at a town dump. Go figure! I'm only on page 250 but the amount of knowledge that I gained is beyond belief. What a smart man. And I agree with the above review that McPherson writes elegantly as well as historically accurate.

Thanks James,

JoeSlyman@Hotmail.com

A great book
I might be a little biased, I read this book for a class McPherson taught. However, I am not a history buff, and took it to fulfill a requirement. I soon found McPherson is as good a writer as he is lecturer. I found the book extremely clear and well written. Sometimes all the battles got a little confusing, I thought the sections on society, before during, and after, were clearer than those on battles. I highly recommend this book as a comprehensive source on the Civil War. Besides being the foremost expert on the Civil War, McPherson is an extremely good writer, he won the Pulitzer Prize for history in 1989.

Organic Chemistry
Published in Hardcover by Jones & Bartlett Pub (31 January, 1997)
Authors: Marye Anne Fox and James K. Whitesell
Average review score:

Novice Approach to Organic Chemistry
Editorial review is right about this book. No current organic text is written and presented like Fox. Instead of a coherent discussion on different functional groups and thier chemistry, Fox had adopted a new approach in introducing the basic concepts of the subject. Chromatography and spectroscopy, the core idea in organic laboratory and research, is introduced early in Chapter 4. The coverage on NMR and GC might be supplemented by an introductory text on the subject like Crews' "Organic Structural Analysis". Yet Fox had successfully familiarized students with the concepts of research. The rest of the text discusses reaction types and mechanisms. A chapter is devoted to the idea of multistep synthesis and retrosynthesis. The book also emphasizes on mechanisms and coming up with the most efficient synthetic route as reflected in the end-of-chapter problem sets.

The Perfect Choice to begin with Organic Chemistry
This Review in Arabic, Because I have alot of good feelings about this book, which I can not describe it,clearly, without my native langauage, However, it will be hard to decribe it in Arabic too. it's a flood of good impressions.

The thoughts of a serious beginner
Halfway through a second-semester course in organic chemistry, I found myself thinking there has to be a better way to present this extremely complex material than is found in the text my class is using (Brown and Foote). A trip to the local academic bookstore where both new and used textbooks are sold proved this assumption wrong. There are four or five textbooks out there still in print and several others which have passed out of print. They all present the material in the same order and fashion as Brown and Foote: review of general chemistry as it applies to the chemistry of carbon, alkanes, cycloalkanes, stereochemistry, alkenes, alkynes, and then functional groups (here the order may vary slightly). Analytical techniques are saved for the middle of the book, then more functional groups until we reach a short unit on biochemistry at the end. From the point of view of this student the subject simply becomes overwhelming about three weeks into the second semester. Reaction after reaction to memorize with little clew as to how these fit into a general scheme for reaction types, mechanism after mechanism with little insight into how these fall into patterns. Then, haply, in the back corner I found Fox and Whitsell for a mere $(...). The material is presented in the way a painter makes a picture. First a sketch, then a little more detail, a little more color until the full portrait of organic chemistry (at the elementary level, at least) is replete with the same detail as in the other books, but with a gradually built foundation whose principles are called up over and again (with back references)so that the learner is not allowed to forget what she learned a month ago. By the end of the third chapter the student has been introduced to alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, cyclocompounds and functional groups containing heteroatoms divided by the hybridization they exhibit. We know about bond cleavage and formation, reaction types, and a nearly completed system for nomenclature. Then come analytical techniques, stereochemistry and chapters 6 and 7 on organic reactions and mechanisms which gives the learner some idea about how and why certain organic reactions go and why others do not and presents a pattern of mechanisms that can be applied thereafter. The detailed chapters that follow up through 16 don't have titles like ETHERS but "Substitution alpha to carbonyl groups," Skeletal-rearrangement reactions, etc. The last part of the book on biochemistry does not go down as Lipids, Carbohydrates, etc., but as Naturally occurring oxygen-containing compounds, Energy storage in organic molecules, etc.

I rejoice in finding this book and have started to re-read the whole course as Ms.Fox has written it. Alas, likely I will not finish that task before the end of the semester catches up to me, but the great CD Whitsell has put into the package will help me review everything without rereading everything since its quizzes mimic the American Chemical Society's standardized test that our class must stand in lieu of a final examination.

THIS IS THE BOOK on O-chem!
